A regularly scheduled service operating on a fixed route isn’t always the most efficient way to offer a service, especially in areas of low or infrequent demand. In such areas, providing a service when a user needs it — often known as dial-a-ride — can be a viable alternative, and can be delivered in a variety of ways.
- Cambridge Dial-a-Ride is a membership scheme for individuals who have difficulty in accessing public transport, and has some regular scheduled shopping services
- FACT Community Transport offer Dial-A-Ride and Day Trip services in Fenland, Huntingdonshire, and East Cambridgeshire
- The Voluntary Network offer a dial-a-ride service, centred on West Suffolk and Haverhill but covering the neighbouring parts of South Cambridgeshire
- Tiger on Demand is available in parts of West Huntingdonshire, Fenland, East Cambridgeshire and South Cambridgeshire
The Combined Authority have a Community Transport page which has a list of the schemes available, broken down by location. Many of these are Community Car schemes, largely reliant on volunteers.
